Y Drych. 5 Ebrill 1900.

Dic Shon Dafydd Gam.

Fe anwyd, Dic Shon Dafydd

mewn bwthyn llwyd a thlawd,

ac yno cadd ei fagu,

heb fawr o wenau ffawd;

ni chafodd ef 'run fantais

i ddysgu'r Saesonaeg,

ac felly ni ddeallai

yn unig ond Cymraeg.

Oes neb a wyr paham

mae Dic Sion Dafydd gam,

bob amser mor anfoddus

i arddel iaith ei fam?

Ond wedi tyfu ’fyny

yn llawn i oedran gwr,

a dod yn berchen teulu

daeth Dicw dros y dwr;

ac wedi cyraedd yma,

beth oedd ei helynt fawr,

ond dysgu siarad Saesneg

a rhoi Cymraeg lawr.

’Roedd Dic yn mhen y flwyddyn

yn medru "Yes" a "No,"

"Good morning," "How dw do,"

and "anyhow," a "that's so,"

"Good night, I guess I'm going,

and is it going to rain,

and will you please, sir, tell me,

what time I'll get the train?"

Daeth Dic yn mhen blynyddau

yn un o deulu'r ffawd,

ac wed'yn yr anghofiodd

fel cadd ei fagu’n dlawd;

'roedd raid my'n'd at y Saeson

i’r capel ar y Sul

am na ddeallai'r teulu

Gymraeg yn fwy na mul.

Mae llawer Dic Shon Dafydd

i'w canfod eto yn awr,

a charu maent eu gweled

yn mhlith y "bobl fawr;

a phan y maent yn siarad

mae'r oll yn Saesonaeg,

o herwydd mae’n anweddus

i siarad yn Gymraeg.

Hoff Gymry yr Americ

na wadwch byth mo’ch iaith,

er byw yn mhlith estroniaid

trwy'r holl flynyddau maith;

os am y moddion goreu

i ddwyn eich plant i Dduw,

gofalwch beth bynag

am gadw’ch iaith yn fyw.

Mae pawb yn gwybod p’am

mae Dic Shon Dafydd gam,

bob amser mor anfoddus

i siarad iaith ei fam.

Morro Castle. AP IAGO.

Y Drych (= the mirror). 5 April 1900.

Dic Shon Dafydd Gam.

(Note: This is an amalgamation of the name Dic Siôn Dafydd, and Dafydd Gam. Dafydd Gam ("one-

eyed David" or "cross-eyed David"

Dafydd ap Llewelyn ap Hywel Fychan (c. 1380 – 25 October 1415), from Sir Frycheiniog / Breconshire, was a staunch supporter of the English and a prominent opponent of Owain Glyndŵr, leader of the Welsh War of Independence 1400-1415. In Wales Dafydd Gam is traditionally considered as a traitor.)

Dic Siôn Dafydd was born

In a dreary poor cottage,

and there he grew up,

without many of fortune’s smiles;

he had no chance (“no advantage”)

to learn English,

and therefore he did not understand

anything but Welsh.

Does anyone know why

Dic Sion Dafydd Gam

is always so reluctant

to use his mother's language?

But after growing up

fully to adulthood (“a man's age”),

and becoming a family man (“a family owner”)

Dicw (“little Dick”) came over the water (i.e. came over to  the USA)

and after arriveing here,

what was his great problem (“his big trouble”),

but learning to speak English

and putting Welsh aside (“down”).

Dic after a year

could say "Yes" and "No,"

"Good morning," "How do (you) do,"

and "anyhow," and "that's so,"

"Good night, I guess I'm going,

and is it going to rain,

and you will please sir, tell me,

what time I'll get the train? "

Dic became some years later (“at (the) end (of) years”)

one of the fortune’s family (i.e. fortune smiled upon him),

and afterwards he forgot

how he was brought up in poverty (“brought up poor”);

He had to go to the English people

to the chapel on Sundays (i.e. go the chapel of the English-speakers) (“on the Sunday”)

because the family did not understand

Welsh any more than a mule.

There are many Dic Shon Dafydds

still to be found now,

and they love to be seen

among the important people (“great people”);

and when they talk

it’s all in English,

because it's imroper / unseemly

to speak in Welsh.

Dear Welsh Americans

never deny your language,

though living among strangers

over many years (“through all the long years”)

if you want the best means

to bring your children to God,

take care whatever happens

to keep your language alive.

Everyone knows why

Dic Shon Dafydd Gam,

is always so reluctant

to speak his mother language.

Morro Castle. AP IAGO.

Y Drych (= el mirall). 5 d'abril de 1900.

Dic Shon Dafydd Gam.

sense gaires somriures de la fortuna;

no tenia cap oportunitat ("cap avantatge")

per aprendre anglès,

i per tant no entenia

res més que’l gal·lès.

Algú sap per què

Dic Sion Dafydd Gam

i després d'arribar aquí,

podria dir "Sí" i "No"

"Bon dia", "Com estàs"

i "de totes maneres" i "és així"

"Bona nit, suposo que m’en vaig,

i plourà?

i si us plau, senyor, digui’m,

a quina hora agafaré el tren? "

com va créixer en la pobresa ("va ser criat pobre");

entre les persones importants ("gent gran");

i quan parlen

tot és en anglès,

perquè és impropi

parlar en gal·lès.
