The Wisconsin Geographic Names Council

People have given millions of names to landscape features in the U.S. However, a consistent method of applying feature names to maps is necessary to minimize confusion. Approving and keeping track of these "official" names is the job of the U.S. Board on Geographic Names.

The meaning of Icelandic Place Names

"Most Icelandic place-names, both of towns, villages, and natural features in the landscape, mean something. This can help visitors to Iceland identify and understand them. For instance, word containing the compounds hver, laug, and reyk(ja) indicate the proximity of hot springs. It should be noted that words or compounds in declension sometimes appear rather different from the nominative. The last part of a place name is usually the name of the geographical feature, e.g. Þingvellir (vellir is the plural of völlur = plain), Þjórsá (á = river), Akrafjall (fjall = mountain), Selfoss (foss = falls)..."

"Pat Wardell: A current project of mine: soon-to-be-published Dictionary of Bergen County (and vicinity) (New Jersey) Place Names- The dictionary will list both names currently in use and names no longer used, with references on chronological usage of names, brief historical notes, and references for additional information in printed sources. It will also include some notes on geographical locations and their names in the vicinity of Bergen County, N.J., especially in the New Jersey counties of Essex, Passaic and Hudson, which were at one time totally or partially included in or associated with Bergen County, and in Orange and Rockland Counties in New York, parts of which, because of disputed boundary lines, were earlier considered part of New Jersey.... 6 April 1998"

Onomastikon (Dictionary of Names)

"This is a collection of names from around the world which was initially intended to help provide character names for live role-players. It includes short historical backgrounds, male and female first names or personal names, and surnames or family names, from many countries and periods.

The author is not an expert in onomastics or history so would like to apologise if any mistakes have been made. All names included are from genuine sources to the best of her knowledge...
