Pwllheli

Pwllheli or Porthely.

The Mayor, in accordance with notice, moved that a committee should take into consideration the question of restoring the old name of Porthely. He had spent weeks in looking up records in London and he found that the name in every one of the charters from the time of the Black Prince — who granted the first charter — to Queen Elizabeth was Porthely.

There was no mention of Pwllheli at all. The seal of the Corporation likewise bore the name Porthely. The name Pwllheli was really a nickname. The real name had nothing to do with "salt pool." It had derived its name from Heli ap Glanawd. He was a great Welshman and had done more for Pwllheli and district than anybody.

Great as was the interest taken by Alderman Anthony and others in the town, Heli or Hely, as he was also called, took a greater interest. He had his residence on the site of the Paragon shop and he would be glad to see Mr. Robyns Owen changing the name of his house from Henblas to Plasmawr for that was the name of the house of Heli.

As they were aware Pwllheli was a very awkward name for visitors to pronounce and that was one reason in favour of restoring the old name.

He was told a good story of a Pwllheli mayor who once attended the Lord Mayor's banquet in London. Nobody present having ever heard of the name Pwllheli he was put among the foreign guests. (Laughter.)

He doubted whether that would have happened had the old name been retained. Many places in Lleyn had the prefix "Port," and he considered that the progressive spirit of the town should be in favour of restoring the prefix to Pwllheli. If the Council agreed with him as to restoring the name he rather favoured the idea of the Town Clerk and Alderman R. O. Jones, that the most appropriate time to make the proclamation would be at the formal opening of the harbour works. —

Mr Cornelius Roberts said it would be necessary to give plenty of notice of the change if it was resolved upon. For instance people might have a large stock of notepaper, etc., with Pwllheli inscribed. (Laughter.) —

Alderman Anthony: Yes. it must be advertised very extensively. How was it that Heli did not think of having a big harbour here? (Laughter.) —

The Mayor: There was no harbour at the time of Heli. The harbour is comparatively of recent formation, a small pool having gradually developed into a big one.

Alderman Anthony said he was sure they were all very grateful to the Mayor for the great trouble he had gone into in looking up the records and for giving them that interesting history. He had pleasure in supporting the proposal of the Mayor, that the matter should be considered by a committee. —

Mr J. E. Hughes said he was also much interested in the history of the town given by the Mayor, but he must say that he would be sorry to see Porthely take the place of Pwllheli. There was an English ring about Porthely and a thorough Welsh ring about Pwllheli. He was much averse to the prevailing tendency to give English names to Welsh places. —

The Mayor: But Porthely is the old Welsh name. —

Mr Hughes: The records, however, must have been written by Englishmen. —

The Mayor: Beaumaris became prosperous after changing its name. —

Mr G. Cornelius Roberts: But we are doing well with Pwllheli as the name. —

Mr R. Albert Jones: I think it does go against a watering place to have an unpronounceable name. —

Mr Roberts Do you think visitors will keep away because of the name Pwllheli? —

Mr R. Albert Jones: I have a lot to do with visitors, Mr Roberts, in the same way as you have and I say that visitors do find it very awkward to be staying in houses with unpronounceable names. —

Alderman Wynne Griffith: Porthely was the original name of the town. —

Mr J. E. Hughes: If we alter the name we shall be very much like the people who cry Wales for the Welsh at a St. David's banquet, but teach English to their children at home. He added that he could not but think many visitors rather enjoyed the difficulty they were put to in pronouncing Pwllheli. —

Eventually it was resolved that the matter should be considered by a committee. Mr Hughes suggesting that the Committee should be known as the Christening Committee.
