The Mission of Appalachian-Scottish & Irish Studies

Appalachian-Scottish & Irish Studies at East Tennessee State University
proposes a cultural quest: a search for a deeper knowledge and a clearer
understanding of the relationships between Appalachia and its major
cultural progenitors, Scotland and Ireland. The study of the Appalachian and
the Scottish and Irish cultures is certainly an admiral pursuit in and of itself, but because
large numbers of Scotch-Irish immigrants settled in the southern Appalachian
mountains, it is imperative to study the effects that these cultures have had on
each other. This quest involves several disciplines, but principally the humanities:
social and cultural history, geography, religion, creative arts, language, folklore,
and education. Scholars and tradition bearers from Scotland, Ireland, and
Appalachia share the similarities and differences between the three regions.
