Most of the inscriptions are in English Yn yr iaith fain y mae’r rhan fwyaf o’r arysgrifiadau, er bod ambell un yn Gymraeg though occasionally there are some Welsh ones.

Mae llawer o’r arysgrifiadau yn amhosibl i’w darllen erbyn heddiw, Many inscriptions are impossible to read by now, and many tombstones are broken in half a mae llawer o’r cerrig wedi eu torri yn eu hanner.

HISTORY OF THE WELSH IN AMERICA; AND THEIR SETTLEMENTS, CHURCHES, MINISTERS, MUSICIANS, POETS, WRITERS; AS WELL AS CHEAP GOVERNMENT AND RAILWAY LAND,WITH ALL THE ESSENTIAL INFORMATION FOR EMIGRANTS TO OBTAIN CHEAP AND PLEASANT HOMES. BY REV. R. D. THOMAS, (IORTHRYN GWYNEDD.) 1872. 6. FLINT CREEK, Des Moines County., Iowa, (Pleasant Grove Post Office) – This small Welsh settlement is situated about 25 miles to the south of the Long Creek settlement. Now one can go there from Columbus Junction, or from Burlington with the “Burlington, Cedar Rapids, and Minnesota Railroad”, getting off at Kossuth Depot. It is four miles from there to the chapel. Not at Sperry Depot, or Morning Sun Station, where Hugh Edwards, Esq., and his family live, originally from Cerrigydrudion, in the county of Dinbych / Denbighshire, North Wales. He and his family are members of the Independent church in Flint Creek. There is splendid fertile countryside from there for miles as far as Flint Creek; and from this latter place through Pleasant Grove, across the [open] country to New London, or [to] Danville, [which are] on the “Burlington & Missouri Railroad”. The first settlers in Flint Creek were John Jones and his wife, from the county of Môn / Anglesey, North Wales, members of the Calvinist Methodist Church. They went there around the year 1855, and they are buried in the cemetery by the chapel. Their sons, Edward Jones and John J. Jones, and their families, are still in the area and are respected farmers. Afterwards Jonah Morris, from the county of Caerfyrddin / Carmarthenshire, South Wales, came with his wife and children in 1843. Mr. Morris was buried in Flint Creek, and his widow moved to Newark, Ohio. James Thomas, from the county of Caerfyrddin / Carmarthenshire, South Wales, went there in 1843. He was buried in the chapel cemetery in May 1868. His widow and his son still live in the area. John Jacobs, from the county of Caerfyrddin / Carmarthenshire, South Wales, went there in 1843. He had been in California. Joshua Jones and his wife went there in 1845 from New York. He was buried next to the English Baptist Chapel there around the year 1856. His widow still lives in the area. In the same year, 1845, Benjamin Jones and his wife went there from London, England. They were Calvinist Methodists. He was buried in a cemetery near Pleasant Grove in the year 1846. His widow is Mrs. Jacobs; his son is Benjamin Jones, and his daughter is the wife of Thomas Thomas (Baptist) and they [all] live there still. Thomas Evans, from the county of Aberteifi / Cardiganshire, and his wife and children, went there in 1845. They belonged to the Independents. His wife and two of his daughters died of cholera, and they were buried in the chapel cemetery. Mr. Henry Evans, their son, still lives in the area. Their daughters are Mrs. Gowdy, of Flint Creek, and Mrs. Gartley in Burlington. Robert Jones and his wife and their children, from from the county of Môn / Anglesey, went there in 1845. At the time he was a member of the Anglican Church, and his wife was a member of the Baptist Church. Both were [still] alive there at the end of 1870. Two of their children were buried in the chapel cemetery, but the following are alive and in comfortable circumstances: John E. Jones (Independent), David E. Jones (Baptist), Isaac N. Jones (Independent), Sarah, the wife of the Reverend Thomas W. Evans, William W. Jones of Clay City, Clay County, Illinois. Erasmus Evans and his wife and sons and daughters went there in 1845, from somewhere near the town of Caernarfon, North Wales. They bought 40 acres of land about a mile west of the chapel. They returned to the coal mines, east of St. Louis, Missouri. They were not religious people. They are perhaps [dead and] buried by now. If any of their relatives are alive, I wish to inform them that the land has not yet been enclosed, and they can reclaim it by paying all the taxes [on it]. Around the year 1850, some people went off to California, and only a few of them ever came back. Thomas Lewis, John Davies, and David Williams left for other places; and Thomas Lewis (Baptist) and his family, originally from the county of Penfro / Pembrokeshire, South Wales. [went] to Dawn, Missouri, in 1848. The Welsh population decreased. Many of the first settlers bought Land Warrants for between $30 and $150, and settled on good land which was woodland and prairie. The little stream [called] Flint Creek runs through the area, and on either side of it there is no shortage of wood and stone. The Welsh have built some good houses in the area; and some of them are rich people, and generous to every good cause. Here is a list of the Welsh people living there in November, 1870: - NAMES. Roberts : Sir Feirionydd / Merionethshire : 1869 There are about 24 families in the area, and a Welsh population of around 120. Among them are some young people in service. The Christian Society was founded in the home of Jonah Morris, by the Reverend David Knowles (Independent) in June, 1848, with [just] a few members. The first chapel was built there by the dear faithful Christian John Jones (Calvinist Methodist) almost all at his own expense. The present attractive new chapel [was built] in 1868. Cost: $11,100. All of it was raised by the people of the area. Well done. Members: 40; Sunday School: 50; congregation: 80. Deacons - Thomas Edwards, Richard Jones. (Treasurer), and Benjamin Jones (Secretary). The following ministers exercised office there: the Reverends David Knowles, George Lewis, John Pryce Jones, John Price, Thomas W. Evans (for 14 years); Evan Griffiths (for a short while). Their present minister is the Reverend Robert Evans, formerly of Waukesha County, Wisconsin.
